The Calm Before The Storm

So I’m sure many of you have been wondering where the hell the updates have been for the last month. Well they have been placed on the back burner for something far far bigger.

Starting from June 11th the Update as you know it will be changing for a month. It Will become Rob’s World Cup Update.

The plan is that I will try and watch every single game of the World Cup. Now before you all think that is too easy let me just spell out some of the obstacles I face.

Time - You see New York is 6 hours behind South Africa meaning the games kick off at 7:30, 10:00 and 2:30. I will be sleep deprived for a month as I attempt this challenge.

Women - Ah yes. Well it seems I have gone and got myself a girlfriend. Katlin (of Valentines Day blog fame) has finally been won over. As Dylan Viner says ‘no girl can resist Robert Gilbert’ and this has proven to be true. However I am fully aware that a month of wall to wall football may put a strain on our relationship. It is a sacrifice I am willing to make. If England winning the World Cup comes at the expense of regular sex.... well she’ll just have to deal with it.

Work - Now working in all American BBQ restaurant means the World Cup is not exactly high on their list of sports to show on TV. At least not until I came along. I have somehow managed to convince the manager that we should show the games, not only that, but we should open the restaurant at 7 am just so we can advertise that we show every game. That’s right, little old Robert Gilbert has convinced a multi-million dollar organization to alter it’s opening hours in order to accommodate my World Cup needs. I even wrote the manager an idiots guide to The World Cup so he knows what he’s talking about (you can read it on my blog)

Acting - Once again I am visiting the fun and frolics of Mr. William Shakespeare and am currently rehearsing for a run of Much Ado About Nothing. Of course rehearsals clash with some of the games so some careful manipulation of rehearsal schedules may be in order. Look if I was able to miss the dress rehearsal of Bus! in 2002 in order to go on a piss up with the boys in Amsterdam I’m sure I can manage this.

Finally let me map out the key rules -

In order for a game to have counted as watched I must watch over 75 minutes of it. This leaves me wiggle room if rehearsals over run or I am called into work or the Subway breaks down.

Watching games with the volume off is allowed.

And just for extra bonus points.

Drinking a beer of one of the countries playing is good.

Watching in a bar designated to a particular country is good.

Staying at home to watch the games is bad.

So follow what proves to be an interesting month. Updates will be coming thick and fast
